Night Mare
Here I am going to represent some of the facts those are available in the internet now-a-days regarding night mare. Some of them are research based and some of them are myth.

Most people experience nightmares on occasion. According to the sleep health
foundation, only 2.5 to 10 percent of adults experience nightmares, yet up
to 90% of those with PTSD have reported “disturbing dreams with some
degree of resemblance to the actual traumatic event,” But what really
causes nightmares?
PTSD :
[Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that can occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a serious accident, a terrorist act, war/combat, rape or other violent personal assault.]

They terrorize us in the middle of the
night with frightening images that are vivid and feel all too real, making our hearts pound and our bodies drip with sweat.
They force some to re-live car accidents, house fires, and other
traumatic events, while others scramble to avoid monsters or ghosts.
Suddenly, we snap awake. Our bodies lurch forward and we breathe a sigh of relief
in realization it was just a nightmare.
“Occasional nightmares are a normal part of dreaming and can provide valuable insight into our psychological and spiritual lives,” Rubin Naiman, psychologist and clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, writes in the paper “Dreamless: the silent epidemic of REM sleep loss.”

Sometimes a nightmare is just a bad dream—isolated and disagreeable
imagery with little emotional response
from the dreamer. However, a nightmare can lead to feelings of fear, terror,
and anxiety; awakening the individual and causing disturbing emotional response, including insomnia, other difficulties in the sleep cycle, or even daytime distress. Fever,
ill health, or poor diet can
also bring on nightmares.
Normally, people dream more than two hours a night, and a nightmare usually happens in the later hours of REM sleep, or rapid eye movement sleep.

What Is REM Sleep ?
-___-__--_-_-__-_-___-_-_
During sleep, the brain moves through five different stages. One of
these stages is rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. During this phase, the eyes
move rapidly in various directions. The other four phases are referred to as
non-REM (NREM) sleep.

Wide awake brain :
During a nightmare, you're usually in the last third of your sleep cycle, when REM is the strongest. REM, which occurs every 90 minutes while you sleep, is a period of high brain activity, rapid eye movement, and inhibited motor activity.
(Ever wonder why you always feel paralyzed or unable to scream, no matter how vivid the rest of your senses are in a dream?)
During REM, this part of your brain (which is associated with fear and
aggression) is highly active.
Physical benefits of night mare :
During REM sleep (which is when most nightmares occur), blood flow decreases to the brain and redirects towards the muscles and other systems, allowing them to restore and recover.
Your growth and stress hormones, immune system, heart and blood pressure are all positively affected .
So while it seems like the worst thing ever, staying
asleep during a doozy of a bad dream could help your overall well being.
Chemically caused :
Medications are also known to contribute to nightmare frequency, from antidepressants to narcotics. Blood-pressure medications have also been linked to bad dreams, too.
(And going off drugs may not help at first either: Withdrawal from alcohol, drugs, and prescriptions is also a trigger.)
Common for some age :
While children have them more often than most, 50% to 70% of all adults get them occasionally —
especially women. And 2% to 8% of adults get them frequently.
Stop Them :
In addition to limiting behaviors that cause nightmares, you can also shut them down once they've begun. Some medical professionals believe in a process called "lucid dreaming," the process of becoming aware while still in a dream.
Once lucid, the dreamer can acknowledge that there is
no real danger and attempt to create an alternate ending — like how to defeat an
attacker, rescue their children, escape the sinking ship, etc.
